Belgian cycling star Philippe Gilbert has moved to divert any suspicion of doping from within the Omega-Pharma team after a former teammate was accused of importing doping products. Retired professional Wim Vansevenant was accused of the crime on Wednesday after it was revealed he had received a package from overseas containing thousands of dollars (euros) worth of doping products. Vansevenant, known primarily for finishing the Tour de France as the 'lanterne rouge' (last place) on several occasions, was set to drive an Omega-Pharma VIP bus around the race this year. He has since been relieved of those duties.

Gilbert, who achieved the rare feat of winning all three Ardennes Classics this season, is tipped to win one or more stages at the Tour de France which begins on Saturday. The Belgian was quick to distance himself and his teammates from the incident. "I want to affirm in the strongest possible way that this story has absolutely nothing to do with me or my team," the Belgian said in a statement addressed to AFP.

"Trying to link this person (Vansevenant) with us has come from the imagination of someone whose intentions are misplaced."According to Belgian press reports Vansevenant was questioned by police after receiving a package from Australia which contained products aimed at building muscle and improving endurance. Vansevenant was questioned by Belgian police for four hours Tuesday, and on Wednesday denied all knowledge of the products.

"I ordered by internet what I thought was amino acids," said the Belgian. "I wanted them to improve my own physical condition. I've been told it's doping products, but I don't know anything about it. "I've heard they haven't even analysed what is in the vials, so how can they be so sure ? In any case, I didn't buy these products with a view to doping."

Gilbert, who last week added the Belgian national road race title to his incredible 2011 haul, said he regretted that most people would automatically link the incident to the performances of his team.
"I heard the news this morning... and it was a big shock to me because this kind of news shouldn't even exist whilst cycling is making huge efforts to get rid of doping," Gilbert added.

"But the worst thing is the connections people will make. Today I even feel victimised because people will start associating my name with this rider. My only error is to wear the same jersey once worn by this guy."
Gilbert, whose performances over the years have steadily improved -- suggesting a hard-work approach to performance enhancement -- said he will fight to prove his own integrity on the race. "I want to reassure my supporters. I will start the Tour de France with even more motivation, and I'll be ready to fight to demonstrate my integrity."
